Alaska has three types of Dental Assistants

  1. Dental Assistant
  2. Dental Assistant Qualified in Coronal Polishing Procedures
  3. Dental Assistant Qualified in Restorative Functions

Dental Assistant

A dental assistant may take x-rays in the state of Alaska without any formal training.  These procedures must be delegated and (indirectly) supervised by a licensed dentist.

Dental Assistant Certified in Coronal Polishing Procedures 

No dental assistant may perform coronal polishing without certification from the board. A coronal polishing certification is renewed biennially in the State of Alaska.  A dental assistant who would like to become certified in coronal polishing must complete a course approved by the Board, or map apply based on licensing in another jurisdiction.

To apply based on education/examination:

  • Complete, signed and notarized application form;
  • Application fee of $50.00 (nonrefundable);
  • Certification fee of $50.00;
  • Completed Course Verification, form 08-4561a, with name and address of sponsor and name of professional presenting the course
  • Course description and/or outline from the course sponsor where you received your training in coronal polishing to verify compliance with 12 AAC 28.830.

If you are currently licensed or certified in another licensing jurisdiction to perform coronal polishing, you may apply in Alaska.  To apply based on licensing in another jurisdiction, you will need:

  • Complete, signed and notarized application form
  • Application fee of $50.00 (nonrefundable)
  • Certification fee of $50.00
  • Completed Course Verification, form 08-4561a, with name and address of sponsor and name of professional presenting the course
  • Course description and/or outline from the course sponsor where you received your training in coronal polishing to verify compliance with 12 AAC 28.830
  • Verification of licensure or certificate to perform coronal polishing, form 08-4561b, sent directly from a jurisdiction where you hold a license

Dental Assistant Certified in Restorative Functions

A dental assistant desiring restorative function certificate shall apply to the board by either showing successful passing of the restorative examination given by the Western Regional Examining Board (WREB), or other equivalent examination approved by the board, within five years preceding restorative function certificate, OR by showing documentation that the dental assistant is currently licensed or certified in another state or United States territory to perform restorative functions.
