Dental Assistants must hold a current permit issued by the Arkansas State Board of Dental Examiners to perform dental radiography, coronal polishing, administration/monitoring of nitrous oxide, and sedation monitoring in the dental office.  It is illegal for anyone to perform these activities without the proper permit.

Radiography, coronal polishing, nitrous oxide administration, and sedation monitoring are considered “expanded duties,” and each specialty requires its own training and permit.

Methods to Obtain a Radiography Permit

  • Receive on-the-job training through an Arkansas-licensed dentist using the Board’s Educational Packet;  OR
  • Be a graduate of a dental assisting program that is accredited by the Council on Dental Accreditation (CODA) of the American Dental Association; OR
  • Be a Certified Dental Assistant through the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).
  • Complete the Arkansas Board-approved Dental Radiography course through the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

Methods to Obtain a Coronal Polishing Permit

  • Receive on-the-job training through an Arkansas-licensed dentist using the Board’s Educational Packet;  OR
  • Be a graduate of a dental assisting program that is accredited by the Council on Dental Accreditation (CODA) of the American Dental Association; OR
  • Be a Certified Dental Assistant through the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).

How much are the permit fees?  There is a fee of $20 for each permit, payable by check or money order.

Additional Requirements: current healthcare provider CPR card, passing score of 75% or better on the jurisprudence exam (taken by mail)
