Iowa has two categories of dental assistants

  1. Dental Assistant Trainees
  2. Registered Dental Assistants

Dental Assistant Trainee

  • Must be at least 17 years old
  • Must be a high school graduate
  • To receive dental assistant trainee status, an individual must submit an application to the Board for review and approval before starting any employment, along with the non-refundable $25 fee, and photo.

Dental assistant trainee status is valid for practice for a maximum of twelve (12) months. If trainee status has expired, the trainee must meet the requirements for registration and receive a certificate of registration in order to practice as a dental assistant.  The dental assistant trainee shall meet the following requirements:

  1. Within 12 months of employment, the dental assistant trainee shall successfully complete a course of study and examination in the areas of infection control, hazardous materials, and jurisprudence. The course of study shall be prior approved by the Board and sponsored by a Board-approved postsecondary school.
  2. Prior to satisfactorily completing 12 months of work as a dental assistant, the trainee must apply to the Board to be reclassified as a registered dental assistant.
  3. Dental assistant trainee status is valid for practice for a maximum of 12 months. If trainee status has expired, the trainee must meet the requirements for registration and receive a certificate of registration in order to practice as a dental assistant.
  4. Notwithstanding paragraphs “b” and “c,” the expiration date for dental assistant trainee status for a person enrolled in a cooperative education or work-study program through an Iowa high school shall be extended until the trainee is 17 years of age and a high school graduate or equivalent. However, a trainee under 18 years of age shall not participate in dental radiography.

Registered Dental Assistant

Eligibility for Registration:

  • Work in a dental office for six months as a dental assistant trainee; or
  • Have had at least six months of prior dental assisting experience under a licensed dentist within the past two years; or
  • Be a graduate of an accredited dental assisting program approved by the Board; and
  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent; and
  • Be 17 years of age or older.

Application Requirements

To become a registered dental assistant, an individual must submit an application to the Board for review and approval. The application must meet the following requirements:

  1. Application completely filled out; all questions answered
  2. Application fee paid
  3. Applicant is a high school graduate
  4. Applicant is at least 17 years of age
  5. Qualifies based on one of the following :
    • Dental Asst Trainee work in dental office (at least 6 months)
    • Prior dental assisting experience w/licensed dentist (at least 6 mons. within the past 2 years)
    • Graduate of accredited dental assisting program
  6. Completed Course of study in Infection Control/  Hazardous Waste at one of the following:
    • At a Board-approved, accredited dental assisting program
    • On the job curriculum approved by Board
  7. Completed Course of study in Jurisprudence at one of the following:
    • At a Board-approved, accredited dental assisting program
    • On the job curriculum approved by Board
  8. Passed Infection Control/Hazardous Materials exam (Board-approved course OR DANB exam after June 1991)
  9. Passed Jurisprudence exam (Board-approved course OR   DANB exam after June 1991)
  10. Evidence of current CPR certification (sponsored by a nationally recognized provider)

How do I become a Registered Dental Assistant in Iowa?  To be registered in Iowa you must submit an application along with the necessary application fees. Simply passing the exams does not allow you to legally work in Iowa.
