Wyoming has two levels of Dental Assistants

  1. Unlicensed Dental Assistant
  2. Dental Assistant Qualified in Placement of Pit and Fissure Sealants

Unlicensed Dental Assistant

An unlicensed dental assistant may perform basic supportive functions under the supervision of a licensed dentist.  He or she may have formal training or be trained on the job by his or her employing dentist.  There is no formal education or training requirement at this level in Wyoming.  Dental Assistants MUST have a Radiograph Permit to take x-rays.

To Apply for a Dental Assistant Radiograph Permit, you must submit the following:

  1. Completed application;
  2. Fee of $30.00 payable by money order, cashier’s check, or certified check;
  3. Proof of legal presence (copy of birth certificate, social security card or passport);
  4. If applicable, a verification letter from each state in which you have been registered and verification of any name change;
  5. Verification of one of the following:
  • a. Completion of WDA Radiology course of study within six months of application; or
  • b. Verification that you are a Certified Dental Assistant through the Dental Assisting National Board; or
  • c. Completion of a 16 hour Board approved program or course of study and verification that you are registered by a dental licensing board as a dental radiographer in a different state. (Copy of certificate showing date and location

Dental Assistant Qualified in Placement of Pit and Fissure Sealants

To apply for a Pit and Fissure Sealant Certificate you will need to submit the following:

  1. Completed application;
  2. Proof of legal presence (copy of birth certificate, social security card or passport);
  3. Successful completion of a minimum of eight hours of clinical and didactic education in pit and fissure sealants. This should be taken through an accredited dental hygiene program or a dental assisting program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the ADA and/or approved by the board. (Copy of certificate showing date and location);
  4. If applicable, a verification letter from each state in which you have been registered and verification of any name change.

What are the fees for dental assistant radiology permits? The initial dental assistant radiology permit fee is $30, and each annual renewal fee is $15.
